Piriformis Syndrome

What is the condition?

Piriformis syndrome is a condition that piriformis, a buttock muscle, spasm and cause compression to the sciatic nerve. It causes pain, numbness and tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot.

How do get it?

There are few factors result into piriformis syndrome. Most of the cases are caused by trauma to the buttocks, or overuse of the muscle, leading to inflammation of soft tissue, muscle spasms, or both, which then resulting nerve compression. Direct compression such as sitting on hard surfaces repeatedly can also result in piriformis syndrome.

What problems does it cause?

People with piriformis syndrome will find it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time. Pain may also be triggered when climbing stairs or directly applying a firm pressure to the piriformis muscle.

What is this treatment

After a holistic assessment, the problems that are causing your symptoms will be evaluated. Treatment plan that targets to your problems will then be conducted by using manual therapy, electrical muscle stimulation and muscle re-education to improve stability of your hips. Individualized exercises to strengthen the muscles involved will also be prescribed.

What result to expect?

In mild case, you can expect to see an improvement within 3 weeks, but it may take up to 6 weeks or longer to see the results in more severe case.
