What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Our lymphatic system is the body’s first line of defence when it comes to tackling pain, inflammation, body infection and moving metabolic waste and toxin out of the body. Sometimes, when our lymph nodes become blocked, fluids block up and accumulate, causing our lymphatic system to turn toxic, which makes us susceptible to sickness. 

A lymphatic draining massage helps get our lymphatic system running by draining excessive unwanted fluid through a slow, gentle massage with long, rhythmic strokes. This gets the lymph fluid moving and directs toxins into organs that can properly dispose of them.

  • Digestive problems 
  • Migraines 
  • Stress

However, people with health conditions like heart failure, blood clots, kidney problems, infections or circulation problems should not have a lymphatic drainage massage. We recommend speaking with a doctor prior to doing the massage if you have any existing health conditions.

What is the experience of doing lymphatic drainage massage at Elevate Physio like?

Any Preparation?

  • Come well hydrated. Dehydration might impair your body’s ability to detoxify and rebuild. 
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal prior. 
  • Prepare minimal clothing that you’re comfortable with.  
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day and avoid making plans after. 
  • Do not consume alcohol before and after. 
  • Do not arrange a session if you are feeling unwell.

How long does it take?

It will take about 30 mins – 1 hour.

Is it painful?

No, there will only be light to moderate pain from pressure from stretching the skin, but nothing to elicit discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

You may experience: 

  •  An increase in urination and/or bowel movements. This is due to toxins excreted from the urinary and gastrointestinal systems. 
  • An increase in hunger and thirst. Your body will be more aware of the nutrients it needs. 
  • Fatigue and muscle aches due to pressure on other systems and constricting vessels and 
  • Possibly a breakout, depending if oils/lotions are used.

 But these are normal and overall there aren’t any major side effects.
