Ankle Sprain

What is the condition?

We all know what ankle sprains are. What you may now know is all ankle sprains are actually some kind of ligament tear. Mild ankle sprain is when theligament is not torn yet and is merely stretched. As it gets more severe, the degree of tear is increased until eventually you get a complete tear of theligament.

How do get it?

Most of the time, your ankle is sprained because you landed on the side of your foot and you roll the foot. This causes your ligament to overstretch.Depending on whether you have previous sprains before or how big of an impact you had when you landed, you may or may not tear the ligament.If you are someone who gets a lot of ankle sprains, one of the contributing factors may be your foot posture or improper footwear.

What problems does it cause?

Leaving frequent ankle sprains alone can lead to ankle instability. When you get to this stage, you may even get your ankle give way during simple activities such as walking. Over the long run, you may then develop arthritis at the ankle.

What is this treatment?

There are 3 stages to treating ankle sprains:

  • Reduce swelling
  • Restore strength
  • Restore balance

Manual therapy, Cold therapy, and exercisetherapy will be utilised to treat ankle sprain

How does it work?

To reduce the swelling, your physiotherapist will do an oedema massage to help drain the swelling to complement the cold therapy. Once the swelling is reduced, your therapist will then commence you on a strengthening program and a program toimprove your balance.

Any post-procedure pain or downtime? What is the aftercare like?

You should avoid doing activities that require a lot of impact through your feet while your ankle is recovering. You will need to ice until the swelling disappears.

What results to expect?

Your treatment should take about 4-6 weeks to take its full effect. It may be longer if you have ankle instability.
