What Happens During a Dry Needling Session at Elevate

Every session starts with an assessment to locate the trigger points relevant to your pain or movement restriction — we don’t needle the painful spot by default, we treat what’s actually causing it. Needles are hair-thin, sterile and single-use; most patients describe insertion as a dull ache or brief cramp rather than sharp pain. Sessions run 30-45 minutes.

Conditions We Treat

● Neck pain and tension headaches
● Lower back pain and sciatica-related trigger points
● Shoulder pain and rotator cuff-related restriction
● Sports tendinopathies (often combined with shockwave therapy)

Pricing: $200 per session, $240 for the first visit (includes assessment).

No. While both use similar fine needles, dry needling is based on Western musculoskeletal science and targets specific myofascial trigger points in muscle tissue. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and targets energy meridians. The practitioners, training, clinical rationale and therapeutic goals are fundamentally different.

The needle insertion itself is usually not painful — it is far finer than a hypodermic needle. When the needle engages a trigger point, you may feel a brief local twitch response: a sudden dull ache or muscle cramp. This is a sign the treatment is working. Some post-session muscle soreness for 24–48 hours is expected, after which you typically feel significant relief.

Most patients see meaningful improvement within 3–4 sessions. For acute conditions with a few weeks of history, 2–3 sessions may resolve the trigger points completely. For chronic conditions present for months or years, 6 or more sessions may be needed. Your physiotherapist will reassess after every 3 sessions and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

Dry needling sessions at Elevate Physiotherapy are $200 per session. Your first visit, which includes a full physiotherapy assessment, is $240. This assessment ensures we correctly identify the trigger points and build an appropriate treatment plan rather than applying a generic protocol.

Yes — and in most cases, combining dry needling with clinical sports massage, manual therapy and targeted exercise therapy produces faster and more durable outcomes than dry needling alone. Our physiotherapists will recommend the most appropriate combination based on your assessment findings.

When performed by a qualified physiotherapist, dry needling is very safe. We use only sterile, single-use needles and apply stringent infection control protocols. The most common side effect is temporary post-session muscle soreness. Significant adverse events are extremely rare. If you have a needle phobia, blood clotting disorders or are pregnant, please inform your physiotherapist before treatment.
