Sports Injuries

What are sports injuries?

Sports injuries are injuries that develop because of physical activities. Though called sports injuries, it may not necessarily come from doing sports. Daily strenuous activities such as carrying a child or cleaning a high cupboard can cause it too!

Types of sports injuries

Acute – Usually triggered by an incident or trauma. Involves a muscle or ligament tear or a fracture.

Chronic – Develops over time and is often a result of repetitive strain or sudden increase in activity levels. These usually involve tendon degeneration or inflammation to the tendons and joints.

What are the symptoms of sports injuries?

There are many symptoms that can arise from sports injuries. These include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Weakness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Bruising
  • Any of these is an indication of some sort of injury and a visit to a sports injury specialist may be warranted.

What are the common causes of sports injuries?

  • Lack of warm up – We all do it. It is the boring part of exercise. But a proper warmup can help our blood circulation and prime our muscles to get ready of activity. This can be the difference in you getting a good workout or a pulled muscle.
  • Poor techniques – Unfortunately, this is almost inevitable for most amateur athletes. Poor techniques often contribute to you using the wrong muscle groups or overusing certain muscle groups. It also causes overloading of your joints. Those overstressed muscles and joints have a higher chance of getting injured.
  • Overtraining – Many of us ramp up our training intensity too quickly in a bid to quickly lose weight or prepare for a marathon that we want to run in. Unfortunately, doing so also increases the chance of injury because all muscles and joints are not used to heavy load.
  • Trauma – This is self-explanatory. This happens when you get hit during a match or during training and your muscle or bones get injured.
