Lower Back Pain: What Causes It and How Physiotherapy Can Help

Lower Back, / By Winsen Citra

Many people come to our clinic with lower back pain. Back pain can really get in the way of your quality of life, whether it’s a dull, constant ache that comes after a long day at work or a sharp, sudden pain that happens when you lift something heavy. Almost everyone will have some kind of lower back pain at least once in their life.

The good news is that most of the time, lower back pain isn’t caused by something serious. Instead, they are usually caused by mechanical problems or lifestyle choices that can be easily fixed with the right approach.

What Causes Lower Back Pain Most Often

We need to know where back pain comes from in order to treat it properly. Even though every patient is different, most lower back problems come from a small number of main causes.

Muscle strain and ligament sprain are the most common reasons. This happens a lot when you make sudden, awkward movements, lift heavy things with bad form, or put too much strain on your body over time. When the back’s muscles or ligaments are stretched too far, small tears happen, which cause inflammation and spasms.

A lack of exercise and bad posture are also very important. A lot of us spend hours bent over laptops or phones. This long “slumped” position puts too much stress on the spinal discs and makes the core muscles that are supposed to support the spine weaker. Over time, not moving around enough makes you stiff and hurts all the time.

Problems with discs, like herniated or bulging discs, can also cause pain. Discs are like pillows that keep your vertebrae from rubbing against each other. If the soft center of a disc pushes through a crack in the outer casing, it can put pressure on nerves nearby. This often leads to “sciatica,” which is when pain spreads down the leg. Finally, changes that happen with age, like osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis, can also make you feel bad. These are natural processes, but the pain that comes with them is easy to control with targeted movement.
